UK’s Best-Kept Secret Trails for Unforgettable Adventures with Your Dog
Exploring new destinations with your four-legged friend is one of the greatest pleasures of being a pet owner, and luckily, the UK is home to so many beautiful trails and routes that deliver outstanding views and memorable experiences. Exercise is so important for humans and dogs alike for a healthy life, so what better way to motivate yourself to get outside and breathe in some fresh air than exploring these hidden gems around the country.
The value of a healthy diet and regular exercise
A healthy diet and regular exercise go hand in hand for a dog’s overall wellbeing and quality of life. Proper nutrition provides the vitamins, minerals, and proteins necessary to support strong muscles, a healthy coat, and a robust immune system that will keep your pet active over the course of their life. A well-balanced diet helps prevent obesity, which can lead to serious health issues such as diabetes, heart disease, and joint problems, ensuring they can accompany you on walks well into old age.
In addition to proper nutrition, regular exercise is crucial for maintaining a dog’s physical and mental health. Activities such as daily walks in the countryside or on great coastal hikes, playtime, and interactive games help keep dogs at a healthy weight, improve their cardiovascular fitness, and reduce behavioural issues caused by boredom or excess energy.
All dogs benefit from time off the lead too, since the pace we walk at as humans isn’t natural for dogs. If they have good recall, they’ll get so much more out of half an hour off the lead in a safe environment, away from traffic, than a 30-minute walk on the pavement on the lead. With that in mind, these seven trails provide the perfect environment for your beloved pet to keep them happy and healthy.
Balcombe Lake, Haywards Heath

Sussex is renowned for its beautiful outdoor spaces and vast green parks and woodlands, so it’s no surprise that it offers countless stunning dog-friendly walks. The walk along Balcombe Lake is a low-impact and relatively short route that can be completed in under an hour, so it’s great for older dogs, but it’s also short enough to be ideal for a gentle run with your dog too. The best times to visit this area are from January to May, but it can get muddy so make sure you wear appropriate footwear.
Carding Mill Valley, Shropshire

Situated in the Shropshire Hills, Carding Mill Valley is an idyllic spot that offers peaceful and serene walks to enjoy with your dog. Beginning at the National Trust car park, you’ll follow a path along the stream which heads towards a waterfall. Continue along the Long Mynd to be rewarded with spectacular views of the surrounding area. Just be sure to wear durable walking boots as some of the paths along this route are a little rocky.
Freshwater Bay, Isle of Wight

Beginning at the breathtaking Alum Bay, the walk to Freshwater Bay takes you along the cliff edge of the Isle of Wight where you’ll get to see infinite views of the blue sea on this coastal trail. There are dog-friendly cafés along the way where you can relax with a drink, as well as historical spots like the Needles Viewpoint and Needles Old Battery. Be sure to do your research before setting off—while it’s a dog-friendly route year-round, some of the main parts of Freshwater Bay are restricted during the summer season.
Rannerdale Knotts, Lake District

Known as the ‘Secret Valley’, Rannerdale Knotts provides hikers with views of Crummock Water and Buttermere. It’s spectacular year-round, but we recommend checking it out in spring when the bluebells begin to bloom for some of the best views. The route is relatively easy and apart from a few stiles, it’s very dog-friendly, taking around 1hr 30mins to complete.
Bempton Cliffs, Yorkshire

A beautiful trail that takes you and your dog along the vibrant Yorkshire coast, the route from Bempton Cliffs to Flamborough Head is teeming with wildlife and flora. From numerous species of seabirds to watch out for, there’s also a chance for other activities like fly-fishing and water sports along this route to enrich the experience for yourself and your dog.
Barry Island, South Wales

Nestled in the town of Barry in South Wales is Jackson Bay. It’s a serene spot that’s perfect for a stress-free walk that you and your dog can revel in. There are soft sandy beaches, clear waters, and surrounding cliffs that give you a picturesque view of South Wales scenery. The route is dog-friendly all year long and the views from the Bristol Channel are truly inspiring—you might even spot seals on the rocks if you’re lucky. This is a relatively flat route so it’s great for a leisurely stroll that all dogs can enjoy.
Formby Beach, Southport

If you’re looking for a more active route, the trail from Formby Beach along the Woodland Walk is perfect. This sand dune paradise has some rare biodiversity to explore, including natterjack toads, and your furry friend will love running along the beach as you take in the coastal views. The route is accessible from the Lifeboat Road and Victoria Road car parks and has a mix of boardwalks and sandy paths as you head for the coast, which can be great for your dogs’ joints to give them different surfaces to walk on.
These hidden gems are guaranteed to create unforgettable memories with your beloved dog and can shake up the usual walking routine for you too. Embrace the spirit of exploration and cherish the opportunity to experience new places with your dog, while also benefitting from exercise in the process.
