You're Not Imagining It

Does This Sound Familiar?

You've tried the premium kibble, the limited-ingredient diet, the supplement a friend recommended. But something still isn't right.

She's always scratching, paws, ears, belly. We've changed her food three times and nothing shifts it.

The gut, immune system and skin are closely connected, so supporting gut health can matter for skin comfort too.

His stomach's so unpredictable. Fine for a week, then loose for days.

Unsettled digestion can be a sign that the gut microbiome is struggling to stay balanced.

He's only six but moves like an old dog, stiff after walks, slow getting up.

The gut can influence inflammation throughout the body, including pathways linked with comfort and movement.

She can't settle. Every noise, every visitor, she's on edge all the time.

The gut and brain are in constant conversation. For some dogs, calm starts in the belly.

These look like four separate problems. But they often share one hidden root cause.

Why It's All Connected

The Gut Sits at the Centre

When the gut falls out of balance, the effects don't always stay in the gut. The effects can cascade through your dog's entire body.

The Gut Falls Out of Balance

Stress, diet, illness and antibiotics can all put the gut microbiome under pressure.

The Gut Barrier Needs Support

Helpful gut bacteria produce compounds that help keep the gut lining healthy.

Balancebacteriaimmunebodyhealth

The Immune System Responds

Because so much immune activity happens around the gut, changes there can influence inflammation elsewhere.

The Gut Talks to the Rest of the Body

The gut is constantly communicating with the brain, skin, joints and other systems.

The Effects Can Show Up Elsewhere

That is why digestion is only part of the gut-health story.

Why the Gut Matters

One Gut. Whole Dog.™

This is why Bonza starts with the gut

Support the gut, and you support the whole dog. It is the simplest, and the most complete, way to feed for health.

A healthy gut does more than support digestion. It communicates with systems throughout the body, which is why Bonza starts there.

Our Nutrition System

How It Works

The Biotics Triad

Most gut nutrition stops at one pillar, a prebiotic or a probiotic. Bonza is built on all three: prebiotics that feed, probiotics that produce, and postbiotics that deliver.

How Bonza works: whole foods feed the gut microbiome, which produces the compounds that support the whole dog, in a continuous cycle
  1. Prebiotics feed

Fibrofos™ 60, Biolex® MB40, chicory root, yucca, baobab and beta-glucans: the fibres your dog's microbiome ferments.

  2. Probiotics produce

Calsporin®, the EFSA-authorised live strain Bacillus velezensis DSM 15544, spore-forming, with canine-specific evidence.

  3. Postbiotics deliver

TruPet™ and L. helveticus HA-122: two named postbiotics, delivering the beneficial compounds directly.

Two postbiotics, the layer most brands skip

Prebiotics feed the helpful bacteria in your dog's gut. Probiotics add selected live bacteria. Postbiotics provide beneficial compounds to their gut, ready-made.

Support their gut and you support the whole dog. Eight gut-organ axes, each connecting the microbiome to the body.

One Gut, Many Connections

The Eight Gut-Organ Axes

The gut doesn't work alone. Research is revealing how the microbiome communicates with systems throughout the body, from the brain and skin to the immune system and joints.

  • gut-Brain

    Mood, calm and behaviour

    The science

The gut and brain communicate through nerves, immune signals and compounds produced by gut bacteria. Supporting a balanced microbiome can help support calm, settled behaviour.

    Read the gut-brain axis

  • gut-Skin

    Coat quality, itch and barrier

    The science

The gut, immune system and skin are closely connected. Supporting a balanced microbiome can help support healthy immune responses, skin comfort and coat condition.

    Read the gut-skin axis

  • gut-Immune

    Defences and inflammation

    The science

Much of the immune system is closely linked with the gut. A balanced microbiome helps support healthy, well-regulated immune responses.

    Read the gut-immune axis

  • gut-Joints

    Comfort and mobility

    The science

Signals linked to the gut can influence the body's inflammatory response. Supporting a balanced microbiome can form part of nutritional support for joint comfort and mobility.

    Read the gut-joint axis

  • gut-Heart

    Circulation and vascular health

    The science

The microbiome produces compounds that interact with pathways involved in cardiovascular health. Supporting a balanced gut can help support healthy circulation and metabolism.

    Read the gut-heart axis

  • Metabolic

    Weight and energy

    The science

The microbiome helps influence how the body uses energy and processes nutrients. A balanced gut can support healthy weight and steady energy.

    Read the gut-metabolic axis

  • Liver

    Detoxification and processing

    The science

The gut and liver work closely together. Supporting the gut barrier and microbial balance helps support the liver's normal processing role.

The Science Caught Up

The Most Significant Mapping of the Dog Gut Microbiome Ever Made

In January 2026 the Waltham Petcare Science Institute published the most complete map of the canine gut microbiome to date. The finding that matters most for your dog's bowl: dogs rely on their gut bacteria to turn dietary fibre into the compounds that support the whole body, from the immune system to the brain.

A varied supply of quality plant fibre feeds a varied, working microbiome. It is the principle Bonza already formulates around: the Biotics Triad, diverse plant fibres, PhytoPlus® and botanicals, all working from the gut out.

Why Bonza Is Different

Formulated With Science. Not Marketing.

Every ingredient earns its place. Formulation decisions are informed by published research, and inclusion levels are declared transparently. Every formula is built on nutritional science, not trends.

Nutritionist Formulated

Formulated in-house by our founder

Every recipe is built by canine nutritionist Glendon Lloyd and reviewed against peer-reviewed research, with each ingredient included for a named biological reason.

PhytoPlus® Proprietary Blend

28 functional ingredients

Our proprietary blend of herbs, botanicals and adaptogens in Superfoods & Ancient Grains, chosen to work alongside the Biotics Triad.

Cold Extrusion

≤70°C for Food, ≤38°C for Bites

Standard extrusion runs at 120°C to 160°C. Heat at that level degrades many botanical compounds. So we work to a ceiling instead: never above 70°C for the food, never above 38°C for the Bites, close to a dog's own body temperature.

The Founder

“Every dog deserves nutrition that works at the cellular level, not just food that fills a bowl.”

Bonza founder Glendon Lloyd sitting in a field with his two labradors, beside a bag of Bonza plant-based dog food

In 2018, a serious health challenge for his wife and co-founder, Catherine, led Glendon deep into nutritional science. What he discovered changed everything: how profoundly nutrition shapes health at the cellular level, how the gut microbiome communicates with systems throughout the body, and how most of what we feed our dogs falls dramatically short of what their biology actually needs, and deserves.

That revelation, combined with formal qualifications in canine nutrition and nutrigenomics, became Bonza. A company built on one conviction: what we feed our dogs can shape whether they thrive or struggle. Every active ingredient is chosen on published evidence. This is not about trends. It is about formulating for what the science shows dogs need, not for what sells.

Good Questions

Your Questions Answered

Is plant-based dog food safe and complete for dogs?

As an increasing number of families choose to feed their dogs non-meat diets for health, environmental and welfare reasons so the amount of research on the impact of plant-based and novel proteins on our dog’s health and wellbeing has increased. Recent research shows that plant-based dogs have less frequent visits to the vet and live 1.7 years longer on average.

Is Bonza suitable for puppies, adult and senior dogs?

We chose to formulate our first food to meet and exceed adult dog nutritional requirements (an adult being defined as 1 year or older. FEDIAF (the body in the EU/UK responsible for dog nutrition) has different guidelines and nutritional standards for different life stage claims – including puppy, adult and senior.

Will my dog actually eat it?

Expertly formulated to support your dog’s best health and deliver an irresistible, tail thumpingly tasty flavour.

How do I switch my dog to Bonza?

We recommend transitioning your dog’s daily meals gradually by blending Bonza with their existing food gradually – 25% days 1-3, 50% days 4-6 and 75% days 7-9. 100% Bonza day 10 on. Some dogs are creatures of habit and make take a while to become accustomed to a new food. This behaviour is called neophobia, and stems from a natural wariness of new foods. It often helps to soak Bonza kibble in warm water before feeding, which can release the aroma and flavour, helping to tempt a wary dog. Research shows that if dogs experience food neophobia this usually lasts a maximum of 9 days which is why we recommend the transition above.

My dog has allergies or a sensitive stomach. Is Bonza suitable?

Many dogs who suffer with meat-based food allergies may benefit from a plant-based dog food like Bonza. Research shows that grains are not the most frequent trigger for allergies in dogs; animal proteins are responsible for the great majority of allergenic responses. For this reason, Bonza is meat-free and also soy, corn, wheat and rice free. Bonza is a hypoallergenic dog food.

As part of our recent enhanced formulation we now include a quality postbiotic, TruPet™. This is a next-generation supplement clinically proven to support a strong gut, sensitive stomach, and promote a healthier microbiome, improving dogs’ general health and wellbeing.

What are prebiotics, probiotics and postbiotics?

The Biotics Triad is Bonza’s three-component framework for gut health: prebiotics, which feed beneficial gut bacteria; probiotics, which replenish and diversify the microbiome; and postbiotics, which deliver the bioactive compounds that connect gut microbial activity to whole-body organ systems. Research confirms that combining all three produces superior outcomes to any single component alone.

Can I give Bites alongside my dog’s current food?

The Supplements range can be used alongside any complete diet. However, they’re specifically designed to complement the Superfoods & Ancient Grains complete food, which provides the daily prebiotic foundation the microbiome needs to thrive. Think of it as the difference between taking a supplement on its own and taking one alongside a diet that actively supports absorption and effectiveness. The two work as a system.

Where should I start, the food or a supplement?

Most dogs eating a complete and balanced diet meet their core nutritional needs from that food alone and do not require a routine supplement. A food labelled complete and balanced is formulated to supply the essential nutrients a dog needs for its life stage, against established nutritional standards. A supplement is not there to correct a diet that is already doing its job. It is there to support a specific need, or to fill a genuine gap that the diet leaves open. That distinction is the foundation for everything that follows, and it is why starting from your goal matters more than starting from a product.

How long before I see a difference?

Digestive benefits, including more consistent stools and reduced gas, typically emerge within two to four weeks. Immune and skin benefits build cumulatively over six to twelve weeks of consistent daily use as the microbiome diversifies and the gut-organ axis communication pathways strengthen.

Our personalised meal plans ensure we conveniently deliver your next fresh box free to your home at just the right time. You never run out or end up with more food than you need, and you get to enjoy 10% off the value of a single bag purchase.

What is the Health & Happiness Guarantee?

Your dog’s health, and their happiness at mealtimes, is our No. 1 priority. We are totally committed to this, so our guarantee is simple and straightforward. Like us, some dogs suffer from food neophobia (a fancy term for a reluctance to try new foods), which is why we recommend transitioning your dog to any new food (not just ours) gradually over an 8-day period. This process can take up to 10-12 days for fussier dogs. If they are not licking their bowl clean after their transition, please contact us via phone, email or chat and we’ll happily get your money back to you.
