The science behind Bonza
Science of nutrition
Your dog is not a wolf Your dog needs nutrients not ingredients Nutrition is the key Ingredients with purpose Protecting nutritional value

01
Your dog is not a wolf
Ancestral diet? First let’s deal with the perceived wisdom your dog needs meat.
27,000
years since dogs evolved from wolves
2800%
more active amylase gene than a wolf’s
It is true our dogs evolved from wolves, but this happened at least 27,000 years ago (1), at much the same time we evolved from nomadic hunting and gathering to farming. Our dogs have evolved alongside us in remarkably similar ways, including a significant evolution in their diets. (2)
Amylase and Maltase. Two significant genetic differences between dogs and wolves.
Amylase, the gene we use to break down carbohydrates into usable nutrient and energy sources, super-evolved in our dogs. Your dog’s amylase gene is 2800% more active than a wolf’s. (3)
Your dog’s maltase gene also breaks down carbohydrates very differently to wolves. It functions similarly to herbivores, such as cows and rabbits, and omnivores, like mouse lemurs and rats, allowing dogs to thrive on a diet rich in starch, unlike wolves. (4)
Research shows us that preference for meat is not an innate behaviour for our dogs, but a learned one. (5)
The truth. Our dogs are omnivores not carnivores. Often referred to as ‘opportunivores’ – to describe a dog’s natural desire to eat whatever is available – plants as well as animals.
Don’t just take our word for it. Here is what manufacturers of meat-based dog food have to say on this (sometimes grudgingly!).

02
Your dog needs nutrients not ingredients
Like you, your dog needs the correct balance of high-quality nutrients to fuel their best health and longest life.
The six basic nutrients are water, proteins, fats, carbohydrates, minerals, and vitamins. These essential nutrients are required as part of your dog’s diet and are involved in all the basic functions of their body.
Your dog can get all these nutrients from either meat or plants. It is the balance, completeness and bioavailability of these nutrients which is most important for their thriving health.
Ingredients are simply the delivery mechanism for the nutrients your dog needs.
The quality of the nutrients in your dog’s food is the most important factor for their health and wellbeing.
Read what these manufacturers of meat-based dog food, vets and canine nutritionists have to say.
03
Nutrition is the key
“Understanding the impact of an anti-inflammatory diet on silent inflammation can elevate the diet from simply a source of calories to being on the cutting edge of gene-silencing technology.”
Often the food we feed our dogs does not do them justice. It is developed to include only the nutrients considered essential to your dog’s survival and little else.
Our mission is to elevate your dog’s food beyond this. To food that helps their body and mind flourish and thrive, not simply survive, at every stage of their lives, long into the future.
The answer, phytonutrients. Only found in plants, these natural, health-giving compounds give fruit and vegetables their rainbow colours. (1)
Not considered essential, it is these potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant nutrients, found in plant-based food, which help to fight off disease and boost immunity. They also offer preventative support for the most common health issues your dog is likely to face – digestive, joint and mobility, skin and coat, dental, heart, brain, eye, anxiety and fatigue. (2)

Ingredients with purpose
Each ingredient – every superfood, super herb and adaptogen – included in your dog’s food, has been selected to serve a purpose, a purpose informed by science.
It must support your dog’s longest, healthiest life at the same time making it the most sustainable dog food on the planet.
For these reasons we will not include corn, wheat, soy – known allergens, or rice which is environmentally harmful, in your dog’s food.
We collaborated with veterinary nutritionists, climate scientists, agronomists, University academics and canine herbalists to develop a food that delivers on this purpose.
Healthier Dogs. Healthier Planet.
05
Protecting nutritional value
Bonza is cooked at gently 70°C or less, using a cold extrusion method, to help preserve the nutrient integrity of our quality plant-based ingredients including the herbs, botanicals and adaptogens.
70°C
or less: how Bonza is cooked
105–150°C+
typical heat extrusion for dry dog food
Most dry dog food is processed using heat extrusion at temperatures ranging from 105°C – 150°C +. Not only does this significantly degrade many important vitamins and minerals but also Omega 3 and essential amino acids.
In addition to protecting vital, heat sensitive nutrients for your dog’s health benefit, cold extrusion also requires less energy and less water during cooking. Less water means less potential for harmful oxidation. A win for the health of your dog and the environment.
An area of increasing concern for scientists is the Maillard Reaction and the formation of potentially harmful advanced glycation end products (AGE’s). that result from high heat processing of food and the potentially damaging effects these have on health and ageing for both you and your dog.

It contains taurine, that supports your dog’s heart health and boosts its oral health. Helps promote gut health, reduce blood pressure, and supports a healthy thyroid function.

Fractionated Coconut Oil
High in healthy saturated fats that can boost fat burning and provide your dog’s body and brain with quick energy. Saturated fats also raise levels of good HDL cholesterol in their blood, which is linked to reduced heart disease risk. To turn coconut oil fats into fuel requires only three steps – a huge improvement on the 26-step process for other fats.

Pineapple

Taurine
Taurine’s benefits are so broad and extensive scientists have described taurine as a ‘wonder molecule’. It promotes cardiovascular health, insulin sensitivity, electrolyte balance, hearing function and immune modulation.

L-Carnitine
L-Carnitine plays a crucial role in the production of energy by transporting fatty acids into your dog’s cells’ mitochondria. The mitochondria act as engines within your dog’s cells, burning fats to create usable energy.

DL-Methionine
An essential amino acid in humans and dogs, it can be converted into glutathione, an important physiological antioxidant, an amino acid that is vitally important to the long-term health of your dog.

Calcium Carbonate
Calcium carbonate is a natural source of calcium, an essential mineral for dogs. Calcium carbonate supports strong bones and teeth, healthy joints, is needed for proper muscle function, regular heartbeat and a healthy immune system.

Vitamin A is a fat-soluble, essential nutrient with a uniquely broad biological remit – functioning as a nuclear hormone via retinoic acid receptors to regulate gene expression across hundreds of genes involved in vision, immune defence, epithelial integrity, reproductive health, and bone development, making it one of the most consequential vitamins in canine nutrition.

Chelated Copper (Copper Glycinate)
Copper is an essential trace mineral with an extraordinary range of biochemical functions – serving as a cofactor for antioxidant enzymes, connective tissue formation, iron metabolism, neurological function, and pigmentation, making it one of the most functionally diverse minerals in canine nutrition.

Iodine (Potassium Iodide)
Iodine is an essential trace mineral whose primary function is as a constituent of thyroid hormones – thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) – the hormones that regulate metabolic rate, energy production, growth, coat quality, and virtually every system in the canine body. Without adequate iodine, thyroid hormone synthesis is impaired and the consequences are wide-reaching.
Ascophyllum nodosum (Maxasco®)
Ascophyllum nodosum is a North Atlantic brown seaweed with an unusually broad bioactive profile – providing marine polysaccharides, phlorotannins, trace minerals, and vitamins that support oral health, gut microbiome balance, immune function, thyroid health, and cellular antioxidant defence in dogs.
